PURCHASING:
Re manufactured LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2 Front Differential PTU
DESCRIPTION:
We provide the highest quality Re-Manufactured Genuine Land Rover differentials.
The differentials are built with genuine OE components, bearings are a modified item to resolve the fault in design, fully stripped down, cleaned using our in house ultrasonic cleaner, tolerances, preload spec and contact mesh checked along with all new seals, and non consumables replaced.
Units are checked fully and tested before dispatch.
PROCESS:
The Differential has been completely reworked from top to bottom, new bearings seals and non consumables, spool and planetary gears replaced. Retrim of the gearing to correct tolerances, reassemble gear kit with correct backlash, pinion depth and gear contact mesh to GearLab spec. New hardware and fully ultrasonic pumpkin and rear case along with pinion flange cut and ground.
Each Differential is individually setup correctly to Gearlab specification and tolerance’s.
WORKMANSHIP:
The workmanship and attention to detail that goes into one of our Differential builds is bar non you will not find any corners cut here. We pride our selves on our gearbox builds not only internally but externally and guarantee our boxes for 12 months on fitted units.
All Differentials are built by hand in house, every part is scrutinized and inspected and nothing is left to chance. My Differentials are fully Re-Manufactured units which means all serviceable parts are replaced.
I find my self more and more repairing Differentials that have apparently been reconditioned months prior to find out that all that may have been changed is the absolute minimum or nothing at all.
All preload and pinion shims custom ground in house to a 1 micron tolerance.
A properly rebuilt automotive part.
Rebuild includes full strip and cleaning of internal oiling system, with modifications to increase oil flow if required.
The item has been completely disassembled, cleaned and examined for wear and breakage. Worn out, missing or non-functioning components have been replaced with new or rebuilt components. It is the functional equivalent of a new part and is virtually indistinguishable from a new part.
WARRANTY:
We’ll also guarantee our work for 1 years, or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) on fitted Differentials, 6 months / 6,000 miles on ‘take-away’ units and 3 months for all auxiliary parts.
SHIPPING / LOGISTICS:
The Differential will be shipped directly to you on a half pallet, please observe how the Differential is secured and fastened to the pallet. This will help you when it’s time to return your old Differential.
Shipping price advertised is for a one way shipping to your desired destination, and does not include the Collection of your old Differential. This can be arranged at an extra cost.
UK Mainland Shipping is covered.
Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland post codes available at an additional cost.
SURCHARGE:
The surcharge is additional to the purchase price, therefore it is required before the Differential is shipped. The surcharge amount is £300 and maybe refundable once you’re old Differential is received.
The old Differential needs to be unmolested and serviceable, what this means is that the Differential needs to come complete not stripped or dismantled, and must have no holes or damage to the case.
If your Differential is leaking oil from the case or has no drive, then its safe to say that the Differential is most likely non serviceable. In this case the £300 surcharge will not be refundable.
EXCHANGE PROCESS:
All Differentials are sold on a exchange basis, therefore your old Differential is required, the exchange process is designed in away to make it convenient for the buyer. Once the new gearbox has been received simply refrain all packaging and securing fixings, these will assist you when returning the old Differential. The return of the old Differential is at a cost of the buyer, it is the responsibility of the buyer to return the Differential in a safe and secure method with the packaging provided.
(The exchange process can be handled by us for an additional cost, usually the same price as the shipping to you.)
DEPARTURE:
All Transmissions are bespoke and built to order, there for there can be down time before the Differential is shipped. We aim to get most Differentials shipped within 3 days of the purchase date.
(This can be extended considerably if the Differential is a bespoke item and requires a build slot.)
WHAT HAS CAUSED MY POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) / TRANSFER BOX / FRONT DIFFERENTIAL TO BE DAMAGED?
In most cases damage to your power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential is caused by mismatched tyres.
It is very important on a Freelander 2 drivetrain for the tyre sizes to be matched between the front and rear axles. The difference in tyre diameter, and thus the rolling radius of the wheel, causes slippage in the drivetrain, which is what they are designed to do off road if the wheels start to slip and this transfers drive to the other wheels, but if this is happening while driving in a straight line on a road it causes extra load to the entire transmission line, eventually resulting in rear differential and/or Power Transfer Unit failure. This constant strain can also affect the Haldex unit and gearbox if the situation continues.
Mismatched tyres can occur from:
fitting different size profile tyres to the front of the car compared to the rear;
having tyres of different makes or even different models of the same make fitted to the vehicle;
putting new tyres on one end of the car but leaving the old worn tyres on the other;
having different tyres pressures;
A difference of just 5mm in diameter dramatically increases the rotational differences between the front and rear axles, so it is imperative that the tyres are always matched – the same make, model, tread depth remaining and air pressure. Always change all 4 tyres at the same time, rather than trying to save a few pounds by changing the fronts and getting a few more miles out of the rears.
If all your tyres are matched then the failure is likely to have come about by something which is causing the wheels to rotate at different speeds, such as a sticking brake calliper or brake pad carrier sliders seized.
IF YOU HAVE DAMAGE TO YOUR DRIVETRAIN PLEASE ENSURE YOU IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OTHERWISE YOU WILL REPLACE THE UNIT AND THE SAME DAMAGE WILL OCCUR AGAIN.
Warning: If your Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failed because of mismatched tyres, a sticking brake calliper, or any other external cause then you will need to correct this cause (replace the tyres / replace the calliper etc.), otherwise you will damage your replacement Power Transfer Unit all over again – and your warranty will not cover you because it will have been damaged by an external component!
HOW CAN I TELL IF MY POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) / TRANSFER BOX / FRONT DIFFERENTIAL NEEDS REPLACING?
A problem with the Freelander 2 Power Transfer Unit (PTU)/ transfer box / front differential will generally show itself in two different ways:
You may hear a whining noise from the front of your Freelander, a little like road noise, which tends to get louder when you place the Freelander under load, such as when you are accelerating. This is generally due to a worn bearing inside the unit from the strain on the drivetrain (i.e. mismatched tyres, sticking brake calliper etc.), the metal shards from the bearing will then be circulating around the inside of the unit (and can generally be seen in the oil) which can cause further damage to the internal components.
You lose the all wheel drive (AWD) but have no error messages (this could have been proceeded by some banging from the front of the vehicle, which can also resonate down the drivetrain to appear to be coming from the rear), so when you need grip the front wheels start spinning and you just skid rather than get out of that muddy field! Please note, this could also occur if you have a problem with your rear differential or Haldex. Putting the Freelander on a ramp with all four wheels in the air and running it should show you if you are getting drive to the rear. This is a very common issue which occurs when the drivetrain has been put under strain (from mismatched tyres, sticking brake calliper etc.) and is generally due to the splines on the sleeve which sits between the Power Transfer Unit and the gearbox wearing, and hence causing them not to engage fully with the driveline components – the tell tale sign of this happening is the presence of rusty oil residue between the mating surfaces of the gearbox and the PTU. In this situation you will also need to replace the sleeve and associated seals – please message us with your chassis / registration number for a price – and ensure you inspect the shaft of the gearbox for any damage to the splines when you replace the Power Transfer Unit.
If you are unsure if your Power Transfer Unit is damaged, or what the cause of your issues are, you are welcome to bring your vehicle to us for inspection and we will diagnose the problem and the cause for you.
